曜変天目の謎

漆黒の釉面が光を浴びると瞬く星のような大小の斑点が現れてくる「曜変天目」。
素地は鉄分の多い灰黒色の陶胎。これに光沢のある紫黒の天目釉が厚くかかり、あたかも星が瞬くような瑠璃玉虫色の斑紋が表われることから「曜変」（曜＝星輝くの意）と名付けられた。
風流数寄の道を探求した足利義政の「東山御物」にある美の中でも茶碗の王座を占めて珍重されていた曜変天目‥‥その目録である『君台観左右帳記』によれば
「地は大変黒く、濃い瑠璃色や淡い瑠璃色の星型の斑点が一面にあって、黄色や白ごく淡い瑠璃色などが種々混じって、絹のように華やかな釉もある」と記され、
「曜変。建盞の内の無上也。天下におほからぬ物なり。萬匹のものにてそろ」とも記述されているほどの宝物である。
現在、『曜変天目』は世界に三点しかなく、全てが日本の国宝に指定されている。これらの曜変天目は800年前の宋代に福建省建窯の蘆花坪で焼かれたのではないかといわれている。ここには面積12ヘクタール、高さ10数メートルに及ぶ夥しい天目茶碗の陶片や窯道具が散らばっているが、今日まで曜変天目の陶片は一点も見つかっていない。
あるいは浙江省の武義窯で焼かれたものなのか、その出自の謎は深まるばかりである。

上辺だけのものではない『曜変天目』を再現

志野織部黄瀬戸を追及していた瀬戸が曜変天目を実見して感動を覚えた1990年、『中国陶磁史』という論文に出会い、その中にあった天目の組成を調合して焼いてみると禾目天目を焼くことができた。
これをきっかけに再現不可能とされていた“曜変天目再現”という深淵のような底知れぬ奥義にのめり込んだ。
発心して数年後、漆黒の上釉の中に含まれている金属化合物が、窯の中で複雑に結晶させることに成功。光線の違いや見る角度によって、青いきらめきと微妙な虹色の光彩を放った星紋が浮かび上がる典型的な曜変天目の特色を捉えた作品を焼成できた。
2002年10月、日本経済新聞の文化面に『陶磁史上最大の謎　曜変天目復元に挑む』とあり、静嘉堂文庫美術館所蔵の曜変天目茶碗とともに、瀬戸毅己の曜変天目も紹介された。
「徒手空拳から曜変に挑んで12年。だれもその焼成秘密を解明していない、いわば陶芸界のフェルマーの問題だからやりがいがあった」と至難の技に挑戦したと語っている。
その頃から彼の曜変天目を注目し、何度も新作を見させていただき、その出来栄えに驚きながらも「より深みのある曜変天目を」と希って苦言を呈してきた。
2016年の春、「漸く見ていただける良い曜変がとれました」と茶碗とぐい呑の新作を持ってこられた。
それは、上辺だけのものではない素地と釉が一体となった深い紫黒の釉に玉虫色に輝いた星紋が結晶した『曜変天目』であった。
　
瀬戸毅己の窯はガス窯や電気窯などのコントロールしやすい窯ではない。不安定な窯を年に70回以上焚き、満足のいく作品は、数点しか取れない。火入から焚き上げまで、一時も窯の火から目が離せない不安定な窯だ。
粉骨砕身して会得した心技をもって、考えることのできるすべての焼成方法を駆使し、酸化、還元、強還元、炭化と焼く度に変えながら際限なくテストを繰り返しながら焼成してきた。
なにより黒い素地に含まれる鉱物を溶かして自然釉の出来る温度を優に越す1320度から1360度という高温で天目を焼くことで、窯炎と黒胎の素地から湧き出た恩恵が、芯から滲み出た “深味ある曜変天目”の重要な要素をクリアーして誰にも負けぬ完成へと導いてくれたのだろう。
まさに品格が漂う『曜変』というのに相応しい輝きのある作品のご紹介となった。

"The mystery of Yohen Tenmoku"

Yohen, the firing effect of the thick black glaze on grayish black clay containing rich iron, has beautiful big and small twinkling star-like patterns spontaneously shown when under the light.

It was described as one of the most precious tea-bowls in famous The Higashiyama Treasure (東山御物) , which shows the collection of Ashikaga Yoshimasa, who was a shogun of Ashikaga shogunate reigned from 1449 to 1473 during the Muromachi period of Japan. According to the list of the Hihashiyama Treasure “Kundai-Kanso Choki(君台観左右帳記)”, the Yohen Tenmoku is written as “The body is jet black. There are so many star-shape dots of dark and pale blue all over the tea-bowl, and sometimes there are silk-like beautiful glaze showing the mixture of the color of yellow, white and pale blue.” “Yohen is the best of all Tenmoku tea-bowl, by the reason of rarity.”
Now, there exist only three Yohen Tenmoku, and all of them are designated national treasure of Japan, although those are considered the production of Ken Kiln in Song Dynasty 800 years ago, or Wuyi Kiln in Chekiang. The mystery just grows. You can still find the countless fragments and equipment around the area, though NO Yohen Tenmoku is found.

In 1990 Takemi Seto, who was at that time persuading Shino, Oribe and Kiseto, was aroused emotionally by looking at Yohen Tenmoku. He later found a book of History of Chinese Pottery that shows the preparation of the Tenmoku glaze, which he surprisingly succeeded to make Tenmoku tea bowls. This miracle motivates further work on Yohen Tenmoku, which are strongly believed impossible to reproduce.

After several years of challenge, he succeeded to crystalize metal compounds of the black glaze in firing. The glittering blue-and-rainbow-colored stars were in his hands, like a prescient dream of his future. In October 2002, His Yohen Tenmoku tea-bowls were introduced on Nikkei News together with of a national treasure, with a title “The Mystery of Pottery History: Challenging the reproduction of Yohen Tenmoku”
Since then he often come to show his new work. His kiln is not easy to control like a gas-fired kiln nor electricity kiln. Only a few works can satisfy him, even though he fires clay more than seventy times in a year, with his unstable kiln which requires him to keep watching from the start until the end. He has tried and examine all ideas of firing: oxidized, reduction, strongly reducing, and carbonize. Firing at very high temperature of 1320 to 1360 Celsius can give rich and profound Yohen to his tea bowls, which no one can create the same level of perfection.

We are pleased to introduce his Yohen Tenmoku, that has dignity benefitting a Yohen.
