長男先生は抽象画の先駆者と言われ、日本を代表する作家の一人である。風景画なども残しているが ほとんどが赤茶色 (ヴェネチアン・レッド ) と黄土色 (イエローオーカー) と黒(プルシャン・ブルー) を基調とした油彩で、筆を使わずにペインティング・ナイフで塗り重ねるように板に造形している。 平面作家であるが左官のようでもあり、立体とも言える作品はどこの角度から長時間眺めても全く飽きがこないところまでストイックに拘りを持って描かれている。まるで絵と禅問答をしているかのようである。この作品は1950年代の貴重な油彩画で、この時代の特徴であるディティールの強さ、赤茶の形の特徴がよく出ている。「結んだ形」をお床に掛け、趣向を考えてお道具を取り合わせ、お茶を一服いただくのも楽しい。
YAMAGUCHI Takeo is a pioneer of abstract painting and one of the most famous artists in Japan. Although he has painted some landscapes, most of his works are oil paintings based on reddish brown (Venetian Red), yellow ochre and black (Prussian Blue), and he forms them on the board as if he were painting over them with a painting knife without using a brush. He is a two-dimensional artist, but also like a plasterer, the work can be said to be three-dimensional, is painted with stoicism to the point where you will not get tired of it at all, no matter how many angles you look at it for a long time. It is as if he is having a Zen discussion with his paintings. This work is a valuable oil painting from the 1950s, the strength of the detail that is characteristic of this era, the characteristics of the shape of reddish brown well. It is fun to hang this work on the floor and enjoy a cup of tea with a selection of utensils.
